Moon sand

Moon sand or kinetic sand is a really fun (and a little messy) thing to do. Especially now, when rain and cold keep us inside. If you look for moon sand in toy stores or online shops you will find that moon sand is quite expensive. But there is another way: Make it yourself!
I did it with my 2 wee ones and they enjoyed the making process as much as the actual play.
When I started to look for recipes online I found some that required some fancy ingredients, but you all know that I like to keep it simple. So I took what was already there:
1 cup of plain flour
1/4 cup of oil (we used Rapeseed, any other plain oil will do)
Yes, that's it! Just kneed the oil into the flour really good, I would say we did it for around 5 minutes and then it is good to go. You might want to experiment with some food colouring, but we kept it a neutral sand colour.
I do recommend to put some old clothes or bibs on smaller children, it can get quite messy.
I provided spoons and cups for playing, you could also use any sand moulds you have at hand.
I really enjoyed the texture myself and since I know the ingredients, I didn't mind my wee one licking her fingers during playtime.
We stored the sand in a glass jar overnight and today the texture hasn't changed! So there you go: enjoy this easy and cheap way to entertain your little ones for hours. Just grab yourself a hot cuppa and join them on the kitchen floor.
4 crunchy thumbs up for this easy and fun recipe!
